This Amana top-load washer is a good washer. It has many good features:

It has 3.4 cu. ft. of capacity which is great for a top-loader. I have a king size blanket/comforter that will fit in this washer which means no more trips to the laundromat!
It automatically locks the lid at certain times so it can spin faster. This enables better cleaning and is a good safety feature as well. Since I have small children, I appreciate this feature. If you forget to put something in and need to put it in after the cycle has started, you just have to pause the wash to get the lid to unlock.
It shows you on the front at which point you are in the cycle with a light. This is not a necessity but just a nice feature. A typical wash on Normal Heavy (which is what I typically use) takes about an hour and ten minutes, which is not too long.
It has a gray interior basket so you can see socks in it - no more losing socks in the washer!

This washer does a good enough job, and is quiet. The locking lid is unnecessary and waste detergent. The spin cycle is not so fast that it would cause the lid to open, i know this because i have watched the spin cycle and was able to lift the lid partially before the latch prevented it from fully opening. it waste detergent because now i have to rinse the detergent cup put in the sink or have it keep building up in the cup. This is the only major draw back of this machine and i will be disconnecting it when i finally get irritated enough to do it.

This machine has some very likable features. The novelty of the locking lid is interesting, especially when there are babies running around the house who take off their dirty clothes and put them in the washing machine. 95% of the time it is fine but occasionally they throw muddly clothing in a load that is already in the rinse cycle. I also have a terrible habit of leaving the lid open while the washer is filling and going through its initial wash cycle. My old washer would not spin and rinse while the lid was open but it was still a bad habit. This one won't do anything until its lid is locked down to allow for a faster spin speed, according to the guide. I sort of wonder what kind of liability issue caused them to have to do something like this but it's probably better not to know. It probably had something to do with a cat.
